Modifying images to make them your own? - Christine - 02-22-2014

Is it okay to modify someone else's image and use it as your own? For example, say you find a picture of Tom Hanks. If you edit said picture and make it your own, maybe change the color, make it more pretty, etc. Would it make it your own? Or would you still need to show the original artist/author, etc?

I think the best idea is the one that is created solely by you... but of course that might be inspired from something I once saw but have forgotten. I do that some times but I start all over from the bottom using no bits from the original.

Using someone else pictures and editing it, doesn't make it yours. You still need to source the image and or tell people what you did with the picture in some way. I personally like using others pictures, but only when I get consent to use it.

I still think you'd need to ask for permission as well as show who owns the copyrights to the image. I have used images on my blogs, with the source, and I did it because I wasn't making money on said blog. I use stock images for my other blogs where I make money from.

Doing something like this is not really recommended. You can edit it all you want, you would still need the original authors consent to use it on your site.
